EDITORIAL A New Sponsor for the Villager
For four years, under the sponsorship of the Town of Badin, I wrote the Badin Bulletin. I wrote the Badin Villager for over a year under the sponsorship of the Badin Inn. A year ago this January Anne and Bill Harwood asked me to reinstate the Badin Villager. Bill found an anonymous sponsor for the coming year and the town agreed to pick up the cost of paper and printing. Bill took it on himself to print up and distribute the newsletter. It was through Anne and Bill’s efforts and their understanding of the need for a newsletter that the residents of Badin could once again read about the happenings in their town. We owe them our thanks. Beginning this year the Badin Inn will once again sponsor the newsletter, this time in partnership with the Town of Badin. With their support, the town will continue to receive the monthly Badin Villager. Bridget Huckabee. Editor.

From Heritage Days to Human Hamster Balls to a Talent Show, this year’s Best of Badin Festival is gearing up to be great fun for everyone.

The two-day festival begins with a bang on Friday with performances by the Southern Express Cloggers. The Essentials play for a street dance from 8 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Nostalgia Band plays music of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s.

Over at the Badin Museum complex three museums depict every aspect of Badin history. On the grounds, a Heritage Days display includes a Civil War demonstration, arrowheads, woodworking, basket weaving and a tractor show. Inflatable rides include the Human Hamster Balls this year, a certain pleaser for the younger set.

The ever-popular Tours of the Narrows Dam run on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Badin High School Alum will gather for reunions: the class of 1955, the last class to hold their graduation ceremony in the Badin Theater, and the class of 1956.

New this year is the Badin’s Got Talent show. Applications for entry may be made until September 10 by calling 704-322-1143 or email badingirl1@yahoo.com. Auditions take place at the Badin Inn on September 11 from 10 a.m. to Noon. Males and females of any age may apply and there are prizes for the winners.

There’ll be a variety of food and drink available and plenty of booths where you can find that unique gift for yourself or someone special.

And to top off a grand event, a spectacular fireworks display takes place over Badin Lake at 9 p.m. on Saturday night.

Best of Badin Festival, Friday and Saturday, September 17 and 18, 2010. Save the date.

She’s the first person you see when you walk into the Badin Town Hall. Always cheerful and efficient, she has served the Town of Badin for 18 years, although it took the town officials 14 years to bestow an official title on her.

Her name is Lorraine Tucker and she is the Town Clerk, a title bestowed, finally, with a special ceremony in October, 2006.

She runs her part of the administration so smoothly that it appears to run itself.

Make a note of the phone number 704-422-3470. This is how you reach her and, through her, the officials who run the town.

She always know where the mayor is, how to reach the chief of police or the city maintenance crew, and will transfer you to the town manager if she can’t help you herself.

She does favors that range from holding mail to selling the town booklet, collecting money for t-shirts for Better Badin and for cookbooks for the Badin School PTA. She’ll field a request to get a cat out of a tree, and once coped with a cry for help to get two giant black snakes out of a well house.

Somehow, some way, if she can’t solve a problem herself, she’ll find someone who can.

Recently a local prankster called to ask for help to get his monkey down from a tree. She alerted the town hall staff and they prepared to go into action…until the jokester admitted his call was a hoax.

It’s all part of Tucker’s job that also happens to include coping with the town’s payroll, minutes from town council meetings and budget retreats, and acting as receptionist, information source, the town manager’s right-hand helper (she has now ‘trained’ more new young managers than she can count) and any other chore that lands on her desk.

She says that her days never go as planned. She has found a sense of humor is the quality she needs the most.

But she loves her job and Badin loves her. Call her first if your monkey gets up a tree.
